About Us…

The Fire Guardians Program is funded by Natural Resources Canada and recognized by the Indigenous Leadership Initiative (ILI). To date, the program has supported 20 Fire Guardians trained as Type 2 and Type 3 firefighters. The Fire Guardian Certificate Program has trained and certified individuals seeking to build careers in forestry and wildland fire management.

Through advancing fire reconciliation and leadership training in wildland fire management, our initiative continues to progress toward our objectives as Guardians of the land. We remain committed to strengthening Indigenous leadership roles in wildfire management and emergency response.

This commitment enables us to better support Indigenous-led fire practices within our Nations, ensuring the safety of our communities while stewarding our natural environments. As wildfires continue to impact our lands, cultural practices and knowledge-sharing allow Fire Guardians to carry forward generational land assessment and monitoring.

During the 2025 wildfire season, Fire Guardians fostered FireSmart practices in communities affected by wildfire activity. By upholding Indigenous fire knowledge and cultural burning practices, Fire Guardians contribute to land stewardship, community resilience, and ecological health.

Emphasizing FireSmart practices alongside Indigenous fire knowledge is essential in supporting wildfire prevention efforts. Through the Fire Guardians Program, we have strengthened our capacity to prevent and respond to wildfires, protecting both people and the environment.
